Mid-Summer HVAC Maintenance Tips

Blog

With summer in full swing, you are probably relying heavily on your air conditioner to keep your living space cool. No one wants their air conditioner to break down during the summer months, so ongoing maintenance during the peak cooling season is a must.

There are a few simple things that you can do today to help maintain your AC system and keep your condenser running efficiently throughout the rest of the summer.

Change the Air Filter

Air is pulled into the condenser from outside before being cooled and pushed through your home. This air passes through a filter that removes all dirt, contaminants, and other debris before the air enters your cooling system.

An air filter that becomes clogged will not allow for proper airflow. Your AC will have to work harder to cool your home, creating the potential for premature failure.

Since your AC unit is running more frequently during the summer months, the filter tends to get dirty much faster during this time of year. Install a new filter to protect your AC system against possible mechanical problems in the future.

Clean the Condenser

The outdoor condenser unit plays a vital role in cooling your home. It's essential that you keep the condenser unit clean if you want your AC system to function properly. Outdoor activities that take place in the summer can dirty the condenser unit.

You should take the time to brush away any grass clippings, leaves, or other debris that may have settled on the condenser. Use a soft cloth to wipe dust off the fin blades, using caution not to bend the blades out of shape.

A clean condenser allows air to flow through your AC system unimpeded. This will increase the efficiency of your air conditioner and help keep your cooling costs low.

Clean the Condensate Drain

Excess moisture that accumulates inside your AC system is collected in a condensate drain. This drain helps to eliminate any potential for water damage within your air conditioner. A condensate drain that becomes clogged with dirt or debris could cause serious problems.

Water will not be able to exit through a dirty condensate drain, causing a backlog of standing water to accumulate. This stagnant water can attract insects and contribute to mold growth that will compromise the quality of your indoor air.

Cleaning the condensate drain during the summer months will protect your AC system against water damage. Be sure to keep up on air conditioning maintenance during the summer months.
