Causes Of A Noisy Furnace

Blog

Unless you use a furnace with old technology, you shouldn't have to deal with loud noises. Modern furnaces boast quiet operation, which is quite commendable. Unfortunately, these modern furnaces may become noisy, especially if they have a problem. Here are possible reasons your furnace is loud.

Dirty Air Filters

Your furnace will get louder as the filters become dirty. But how do filters affect your furnace's operation? Well, clogged filters restrict the airflow. As such, the furnace has to strain when blowing warm air through the clogged filters. Things will be different if the filters are clean. So, if you haven't replaced the filters in months, try swapping them with clean ones to see if the noises will disappear.

Problematic Ductwork

Do you wonder why there are some rattling or banging noises whenever your furnace is running? The problem might be with your ductwork, not your furnace. As such, you should get an HVAC technician to inspect the ductwork. It could be that the ductwork is loose, so it keeps rattling when the furnace blows air. The technician will fasten any loose spots to ensure the noise disappears.

You Haven't Serviced It in Years

All HVAC systems have different ways to alert you that they are due for servicing. So, don't be surprised if your furnace is making weird noises because you haven't serviced it in years. Maybe some of the furnace components are worn out and need to be replaced. Additionally, these components may have accumulated a lot of dirt and need cleaning. So, before you call for furnace repair, have a technician service the entire system.

Cracked Heat Exchanger

Your furnace will turn noisy if the heat exchanger has a crack. So, if you can't solve the noise issue, call a furnace repair expert to check whether the heat exchanger is the cause. If there are some cracks on the heat exchanger, the technician will replace it. You can't ignore the issue because you'll be putting your family at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

If your furnace is much louder and there is a weird smell in your house, there is a high chance you have a cracked heat exchanger. You might also notice soot buildup due to incomplete combustion.

Bad Blower Motor

A faulty blower motor could be the reason for loud strange noises. Sometimes the blower motor might be good, but it just needs some lubrication. If the motor produces a screeching noise, the blower blades are grinding against the housing. The blades can be realigned or straightened to solve the issue.
