Tips To Save Money On Your A/C Bill

Blog

It's easy to turn up the A/C during those hot summer months to feel more comfortable, but then you get your energy bill for the month and your stomach sinks just a bit when you see the amount you owe. There are a number of ways to help stay cool without cranking the dial on your thermostat, and they can help save you money on your bill so you aren't left feeling sick when you open up that envelope. See below for some ways to stay cool and still save some loot.

Program Your Thermostat

Program the thermostat so it's set to certain temperatures when you're home and a different temperature when you aren't home. You can also program the thermostat so it is cooler at night, or not as cool while you're asleep. If you don't already have a programmable thermostat, you should invest in one. It can save you money in winter months as well. The thermostat can be programmed any way you prefer. There are even some available that can be controlled with your cell phone while you're away.

Close The Curtains

Close your curtains and blinds during the day when the sun is out and open them again at night when it's cooled off outside. The sun can heat up your house, so try your best to keep it out. Blackout curtains can go a long way, especially in bedrooms.

Open The Windows

When it's cool outside, open up the windows and turn down the air conditioner. Let mother nature cool down your house instead of your unit. Keep the windows open all night, then close them first thing in the morning before it gets too humid outside.

Install A Whole House Fan

A whole house fan pulls the warm air up and out of the house, cooling down your home almost instantly. Simply open up the windows, then turn the fan on. This is a great option if you have a two-story home to help circulate the air a bit and cool down the upstairs and the downstairs.

Turn On Ceiling Fans

In the evening, or when in a room, turn on the ceiling fan to help circulate the air. Use these fans at night to cool you down when you're sleeping. Be sure to turn the fan blades to the summer setting to help blow the air down, rather than pulling the air up.

Other Tips:

  • Cook outside, rather than using the oven or stove-top, which can heat up your home.
  • Stay on the lower floors of your home to stay cool (hot air rises).
  • Seal doors and windows with caulk to keep that cold air from escaping.
  • Change your air conditioning filter monthly to ensure proper air flow to your system.
  • Keep vents clear of furniture and other items to keep air flowing through your home properly.

You can still stay cool this summer without breaking the bank. Follow the tips above to prevent expensive energy bills this warm weather season. If you'd like other ideas to save on cooling costs, click for more info.
